The local population is friendly towards foreigners, always ready to help and easy to get in touch with. How to obtain a residence permit in Cyprus?

What does a Cyprus residence permit give?

The document is valid for one year with the possibility of extension an unlimited number of times. The holder of a residence permit can leave and enter the country without a visa. But you cannot be outside the territory of Cyprus for more than three months. Otherwise, the residence permit will be cancelled. Depending on the type of document, a person can relax, study, work or run his own business on the island. He has access to quality medical care.

A residence permit in Cyprus (Pink Slip) is provided to all family members. Children can attend kindergarten or school, or study at universities in the country. A residence permit allows you to obtain visas from other countries through their embassies on the island. But it is impossible to obtain Schengen, since Cyprus is not part of the Schengen zone. After 7 years of permanent residence in the country, you can apply for citizenship.

Cyprus visa for Russians

It is very simple for a citizen of the Russian Federation to enter Cyprus - you fill out a form downloaded from the website of the Cypriot embassy, send it to the email address indicated there and wait for a pro-visa from a couple of hours to a couple of days.

Please note that these entry rules into Cyprus only apply if you are flying directly from Russia. If you are flying from another country, you must either apply for a Cyprus visa at the embassy in advance, or have an open Schengen visa.

The received pro-visa must be printed, since employees of Russian airlines may not allow you to board the flight without it. With this visa you can enter the island once and live there for 90 days.

Conditions for foreigners

Certain categories of foreigners can apply for a residence permit in Cyprus:

  • Hired workers. A permit is issued only if hiring a migrant worker will not increase the unemployment rate in the country.
  • Entrepreneurs. A foreigner planning to open a business on the island must not have businesses in other countries. The amount of investment in the business must be more than €172,000.
  • Owners of international companies. Businessmen who have companies in other countries can open their branches in the territory of the state of Cyprus.
  • Owners of property on the island. However, they cannot conduct business or work in the country.

Vaccine as a pass

However, there is one condition for tourists who want to relax in Cyprus. We are talking about vaccination against coronavirus, which should be done before flying to the island. That is, in order to go to the beaches of Cyprus, a Russian tourist needs to be vaccinated with the Sputnik V vaccine.

Russia and Cyprus are negotiating to allow the recognition of vaccines from other countries for tourism purposes. And for fully vaccinated tourists, there will be no additional requirements when entering Cyprus.

The tourism protocol states that for tourists from the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Armenia, Bahrain, Belarus, Canada, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Switzerland, Ukraine, UAE, UK and USA vaccination is not a requirement for entry. But if they have been vaccinated, they will not have to present PCR tests or self-isolate. If there is no vaccination, then you need to get a test and spend part of the rest in quarantine.

Before traveling to the island, you will need to upload a copy of the vaccination certificate in English to the special online platform Cyprus Flight Pass and provide information about the vaccination. If a traveler provides false information, he will face a fine.

Methods for obtaining a residence permit in Cyprus

There are many ways to obtain a residence permit in Cyprus for Russians and immigrants from other CIS countries.

Employment

A candidate to work in a Cypriot company must receive an official invitation from its management. First, the potential employer must prove to the relevant authorities the need to hire a foreigner. This is only possible if there is no Cypriot applying for the vacancy. In addition to the usual package of documents, the applicant submits a permit to work in the country. It must be received in advance. Some types of work may require a special license. All permits and licenses are issued by the Ministry of Labor of Cyprus.

Business

The tax legislation of Cyprus is one of the most optimal in the EU countries. It has the lowest corporate tax rate in Europe. To obtain a Cyprus residence permit, the applicant must buy a local company or establish a new one. The most popular form of registration is Limited Liability Company (Ltd). This is a limited liability company (LLC).

The next step for a businessman is to prove the financial viability of his company. The company's current account must receive money from abroad. It is also necessary to open a local bank account in the name of the business. A businessman can be the founder of a Cypriot company or its manager with official employment.

Purchase of real estate

The object of purchase can only be a new building. To obtain a Cyprus residence permit, its cost must start from €300,000. If the price of the property is €2,000,000 or more, the owner can apply for citizenship of the country.

Stages of purchasing real estate:

  1. Purchasing an object for the required amount, which must necessarily come from abroad.
  2. Confirmation of a permanent official income of at least 65,000 € per family.
  3. Providing a certificate of no criminal record for the applicant and his family members.
  4. Making a deposit in a local bank in the amount of at least 30,000 €.
  5. Submitting an application for refusal of claims to work. The same applications are submitted by all family members applying for a residence permit in Cyprus.

All certificates and documents must be submitted in Greek and be notarized. Typically, a residence permit based on the purchase of housing is granted within six months.

Studies

In the Republic of Cyprus, foreigners can study at school, college or university. During their studies they receive a residence permit in Cyprus. The same status is granted to parents or guardians of minor children accompanying them to study. To obtain a residence permit on the basis of study, you must provide a certificate of income and open an account in a local bank. The account must contain an amount sufficient to support the child and accompanying adult.

Students who can obtain a Cyprus residence permit for studies

The country's higher education institutions are not popular in the EU. But they are known for quality training in finance and international economics. Students are given lectures by heads of international companies operating on the island.

Financial independence

Rich people can obtain a residence permit by proving their financial solvency. This must be an annual income of at least 30,000€ per applicant and 5,000€ for each family member. Adult children are not included in this list. They are independent applicants. You also need to present a rental agreement and a certificate of deposit with a local bank. Based on financial independence, a residence permit is granted without the right to work.

Marriage

Citizens of other countries can obtain a residence permit after an official marriage with a Cypriot woman or a Cypriot man. Registration can take place in the foreigner’s home country or in Cyprus. Three years after marriage registration, having a residence permit, you are allowed to apply for citizenship. You have to wait many months and sometimes years for results.

Family reunion

The basis for obtaining a residence permit in Cyprus is provided to foreigners whose close relatives temporarily or permanently reside in the country. These relatives include parents, spouses and children. To obtain a residence permit, you must present documents of kinship and a passport of a family member who permanently lives in Cyprus.

Refugee status

It is quite difficult to obtain such status. Immigrants from the CIS countries rarely apply for it in Cyprus.

According to state legislation, all refugees are divided into two categories. The first is migrants who were persecuted in their homeland for political or religious reasons. They must provide documents, photo and video evidence, medical certificates of the persecution. Having received refugee status and a residence permit, migrants can get an official job and bring family members with them. After seven years of permanent residence in the country, they are granted citizenship.

The second category of refugees includes migrants from states where military operations or coups are taking place. Foreigners can obtain refugee status and a residence permit in Cyprus only if they sign a written undertaking to return to their homeland after the situation normalizes.

Terms of residence permit

A residence permit in Cyprus is issued for one year. The speed of its processing depends on many factors. These include the age and financial viability of the applicant and the reason for moving. Residence permits are issued faster to wealthy people and those who buy expensive real estate. If the migration service has doubts about the information submitted by the client, it is checked more carefully. This significantly increases the processing time for the application. Usually documents are processed within 3 - 4 months. Sometimes the period increases to 8 - 12 months or more.

Why can they refuse a Cyprus residence permit?

The Migration Service may refuse an applicant for a number of reasons:

  • criminal record in the country of residence;
  • inaccurate information in the provided documents;
  • false documents;
  • violation of the deadline for submitting applications and documents;
  • fictitious marriage or adoption.

In each specific case there may be additional reasons for refusal. After receiving a negative response, you can apply for a Cyprus residence permit again. The chances of a positive outcome increase if you hire a local attorney. But if the reasons for refusal are compelling, you should not expect to receive a residence permit.

Pros and cons of living in Cyprus

The main advantage of living in the Republic is the warm climate and beautiful nature. The state occupies the entire island with the exception of Northern Cyprus, a territory occupied by Turkish troops as determined by the international community. The Mediterranean Sea and beautiful beaches attract many tourists to the island. Summer here lasts for 9 - 10 months. In winter, the air temperature rarely drops below 15°C. The sea water is clean, the beach infrastructure is well developed. Vegetables and fruits grow on the island all year round.

There are many Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians living in Cyprus. You can easily find Russian-language schools, shops and other public places with services in Russian. The island has a calm environment and friendly locals. The crime rate here is very low.

The main disadvantages of living in Cyprus include the following:

  • Poor organization of public transport and expensive taxis.
  • The leisurely lifestyle of Cypriots makes it impossible to resolve urgent issues.
  • Expensive medications in pharmacies.
  • The climate is too hot for some people.

A residence permit in Cyprus is issued faster and easier than in other EU countries. After receiving it, you can apply for permanent residence and citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus.
