How to apply for and obtain a visa to Iceland yourself

The mention of the word “island” evokes for many an association of something beautiful, unusual, and mysterious. This is what Iceland is - the northernmost island state in Europe not connected to the mainland.

This is where you can see the beauty of our planet and the greatness of natural elements. Volcanoes and geysers, thermal springs and glaciers, fjords and waterfalls - the landscapes look like something out of a science fiction movie that has become reality.

The main goal of a tourist heading to an unusual country is not to see the achievements of civilization, but to enjoy their absence. Meanwhile, the country cannot be called backward. Life expectancy is high, crime is record low, the environment is incomparable - Iceland is one of the most favorable countries in the world to live in.

Reykjavik, Iceland

The traveler will find an abundance of cultural attractions in the small Icelandic capital - Reykjavik. But a tenth of the entire area of the country is occupied by a natural site - the Vatnajökull National Park, on which the glacier of the same name is located - the largest in Europe.

Main types of visas

Obtaining a Schengen visa is necessary in cases where we are talking about a short stay in the country (up to 90 days within six months). Which type of visa to apply for depends on the purpose of your planned trip.

Individual tourism and tourist visa

To make a tourist trip to Iceland, you can contact a travel agency accredited by the Embassy. In this case, obtaining a visa for up to 30 days will be a faster process compared to obtaining a permit individually. Independent travelers who do not use the services of a travel agency are subject to increased strictness from the Embassy. Their documents may be sent to the Icelandic Immigration Service for consideration, which entails an increase in the waiting period for a decision.

Business visa

When there is a need to visit Icelandic companies, firms, organizations for the purpose of negotiations, concluding deals, or resolving other work issues, the traveler needs a business visa.

Guestbook

To visit close relatives, friends or acquaintances, you need to receive an invitation from them and apply for a visitor visa to Iceland.

Visiting cultural and sporting events

To participate in international events of various nature (cultural, sports, scientific, educational), you must have a visa in hand that corresponds to the purpose of the planned trip.

Visa for seafarers

A separate type of visa that is issued to crew members of ships sailing to Iceland.

Transit

When a traveler travels to a country that is not part of the Schengen area via Iceland, a transit visa is required.

For a long stay in Iceland (study, work, family reunion) a long-term national visa is required.

How much does a visa to Iceland cost in 2021?

A mandatory visa fee is charged from each applicant and amounts to 3,000 rubles. When submitting documents through the visa center, a service fee is required - 2,070 rubles for each application. Citizens submitting a request to regional visa centers pay an additional 450 rubles for sending a package of papers.

Regardless of the content of the decision received, funds paid for intermediary services provided during the visa application process are not refunded.

Meanwhile, there are categories of citizens exempt from paying consular fees. These include:

  • persons who are sent for training (schoolchildren, students, graduate students, accompanying teachers, lecturers, scientific supervisors);
  • members of official delegations, governments, courts;
  • citizens participating in various international level programs (sports, scientific, creative and others);
  • children under 6 years of age;
  • citizens going to the funeral of a relative;
  • persons in need of urgent medical care.

The Visa Center does not charge the cost of services from young children (under 6 years old), disabled people and persons accompanying them.

How to get a visa to Iceland yourself
